The House of the Salmon is home to the Chartres Tourist Office.

This half-timbered building, constructed around 1500, is a reminder of the time when sea water fish, brought here by Norman fish merchants on their way to Orléans, were sold in this street.
The fresh water fish market was in the next street. There, you would find fish from the nearby River Eure, the Seine, the Loire and the ponds of the Perche…

These market streets were situated at the foot of the château, once inhabited by the Count of Chartres, but now disappeared. La place de la Poissonnerie – Fishmonger Square – gives access by some steep steps, to the lower town.

The roof and façade of the House of the Salmon were classified as Historical Monuments in 1928, but only partially escaped bombing in 1944. The building was completely restored between 1950 and 1956, conserving many of the original sculptures, including the salmon that gives it its name.
