The crypt of Chartres Cathedral is the largest in France.
This huge, partly subterranean church is exactly the same size and shape as the upper part of the building.

The walls of the crypt are witness to various periods of construction, the oldest part dating from the gallo-roman era. We can also find the last vestiges of the 11th century cathedral built under the orders of Bishop Fulbert, following one of the many fires that have ravaged the building over the centuries.

Among the many things to see, of particular note are the numerous chapels, the baptismal fonts, a 33 metre deep well, frescoes from the 12th and 19th centuries, the statue of Notre-Dame-de-Sous-Terre and others from the Royal Door of the cathedral.
